Improve Speed of Keystroke Handling with TGTools on Windows Platform

This feature was implemented in the TGTools (version 1.68K) third-party plug-in
by Tobias Giesen.

IWBNI the speed at which keystrokes are processed in applications other than Finale were improved in the case when the TGTools third-party plug-in by Tobias Giesen is loaded with Finale on the Windows platform. As it is now, on some systems keystrokes are processed slowly in some applications.

To measure the speed at which keystrokes are handled, the following test was performed:

  1. Close all programs and disconnect on-line connections.

  2.
  3. Install TGTools.

  4.
  5. Run Finale.

  6.
  7. Run Microsoft Word 97 and type the sequence of keys ;lkjasdf ten times as fast as possible and measure the elapsed time between when the last key is pressed and when all text that has been typed is displayed.

  8.
  9. Close Microsoft Word 97 and repeat step 4 for each of the following programs: Netscape Composer, Notepad, and the Edit Text dialog box in Finale.

  10.
  11. Uninstall TGTools and repeat steps 3 through 5.
The following results were obtained for various conditions:

Program Time Required to Display Text
With TGTools Without TGTools
Microsoft Word 97 5 seconds 0 seconds
Netscape Composer 3 seconds 0 seconds
Notepad 0 seconds 0 seconds
Finale (Edit Text dialog box) 0 seconds 0 seconds

Note: This test was performed on a Pentium 200 with Finale 2000b running on Windows 98 (second release) with TGTools 1.68C.

Note: Similar delays have been observed on the Windows 95 platform.
