Ties for Short and Ultra-Short Spans
Many use the following conventions for tie placement:
Tie placements are broken down into the following three classes according
to the horizontal distance between the tied noteheads:
-
Normal Placement. This is an inner placement that is used for all
ties for which the horizontal distance between the tied noteheads is greater
than or equal to 1/8 inch.
-
Short Placement. This is an inner placement that is used for all
ties for which the horizontal distance between the tied noteheads is greater
than or equal to 1/16 inch and less than 1/8 inch. For this case, one might
reduce the horizontal distances (of the normal placement) between the tie
tips and noteheads by a factor of two. This brings each of the tie tips
closer to the notehead and permits the tie to have a somewhat normal arc.
-
Ultra-short Placement. This placement is an outer placement that
is used for all ties for which the horizontal distance between the tied
noteheads is less than 1/16 inch. The outer placement is used for this
case because the extremely small distance between the noteheads is too
small to accommodate an inner tie.
IWBNI it were possible to specify these thresholds (e.g. the 1/8 inch and
1/16 inch given here as examples) and if the appropriate placement (i.e.
normal, short and ultra-short) were automatically applied.
