Transformations

In the Cello Suite, the following transformations are used to generate new material from the two short themes:

Transposition
Inversion
Retrograde
Circular Shift
Truncation
Swap
Repetition
Echo

Transformations may combined (e.g. truncation of inversion or left circular shift of retrograde).

Transposition

A theme may be transposed. In addition, each note of a theme may be transposed by any number of octaves up or down.

Inversion

A theme may be inverted.

Retrograde

A theme may be played backwards.

Circular Shift

The last note of a theme may be played and then followed by the first through penultimate notes of the theme. This is a right cicular shift by 1.

The second through last notes of a theme may be played and then followed by the first note. This is a left circular shift by 1.

Truncation

A theme may be right truncated by omitting the last note or left truncated by omitting the first note.

Swap

Any two notes in a theme may be exchanged.

Repetition

Any note of a theme may be repeated any number of times before the next note of the theme is played. Also, any repetition of a note in a theme may be omitted.

Echo

A given note of a theme may be repeated (echoed) at some time after the note that follows it in the theme.
